Safari Camp is a great option for campers who love the outdoors, thrive in a small group setting, and are looking for extra adventure. Safari campers stay a 10 minute hike away from base camp at the Safari Outpost. As a primitive camp, there is no running water or electricity at Safari Camp, instead campers will stay in elevated huts, spend late nights around the campfire, and even prepare some of their own meals. Safari campers will have the opportunity to do our challenge course activities (zipline, giant swing, climbing tower, etc.) and swim like all other campers who stay on BSCC property. All week long Safari campers will also get to go canoeing/ rafting on the Little Miami River (weather permitting) and possibly go on other off-campus day trips.

Camp Specific Info:

Theme: Survival of the Faithful

Key Verse: 3 John 1:4

Faith is the cornerstone of joy in life and gives us the strength to survive all of life’s hardships. Durning the week of Safari Camp, campers will learn about this and how 3 John 1:4 applies to their life.

Bring a backpack that’s comfortable to wear while hiking, and can also carry water and other essentials throughout the day. Sunscreen and bug spray are both must haves. A hat and/or sunglasses wouldn’t be a bad idea. Clothes are going to get dirty, so pack accordingly and while you’re at it pack a few extras sets just to be safe. Bring shoes that are comfortable to hike in, as well as a separate pair of water shoes or hiking sandals that can get wet while we’re exploring the creek or rafting down the river. We will also be swimming daily, so bring along appropriate swim attire. Please bring a flashlight and/or headlamp with extra batteries. And of course, please bring your Bible.

Joe and Julie Samek are excited to be leading this year’s Safari 5 Camp! This will be their fourth year doing Safari Camp. Joe joined the Air Force in 2002 and had the opportunity to serve in various assignments across the country. Joe and Julie chose to settle down in Ohio and start a family farm at the end of my military career. That was just a little over three years ago now. They are both actively involved with Water’s Edge Christian Church, where he currently serves as a deacon and Julie sings with the worship team. In addition to farming, they are both engineers working in the defense and cyber industry. They have two sons, ages 7 and 5, as well as a 1 year old daughter. Their oldest son will be joining them for camp this year, and he is extremely excited since it will be his first time at camp!

Pro-tip from somebody who spent decades wearing combat boots: bring extra socks! Your feet will thank you when put on a dry pair right before a hike.
